Campus Safety Alert Southern Illinois University Carbondale May 7, 2009

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety is investigating an armed robbery, vehicular hijacking and theft that occurred at 1:35 a.m., Thursday, May 7, in Lot 45, the parking lot along Grand Avenue across from the Student Recreation Center.

An 18-year-old SIUC student told police he was shutting the trunk lid on his car when two men approached him from behind and one of them pointed a gun at him, demanding the victim get into his car. The victim then drove the suspects around Carbondale while the suspects searched the car.

The suspects took the victim’s wallet, a black Apple Nano iPod, and other items. The suspects told the victim to stop his car at the intersection of Wall and East Jackson streets, where they got out of the car and ran north on Wall Street.

The victim was not injured.

One suspect is described as a white male, 5-feet, 9-inches inches tall, with a slim build. He was wearing a black ski mask, black hoodie, dark denim jeans, black shoes and black Nike gloves. The second suspect is described as a black male, 5-feet, 4-inches tall, with a stocky build. He was wearing a black hoodie, maroon bandana, black jeans, black shoes and black Nike gloves. Both suspects were armed with a black handgun.

Police advise members of the campus community to use Saluki Express, Night Safety Transit service and the Brightway Path when traveling at night. In addition, emergency call phones are located across campus, including on both overpasses.
