Innovative designer Karim Rashid to visit SIUC

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The man who brought the cone vacuum and thousands of other innovative product designs to the world is coming to Southern Illinois University Carbondale next week.

Karim Rashid will be the guest of honor at a reception and book signing from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, March 30, at Quigley Hall, Room 122. He’ll also present a lecture, open to the University community and public, at 7 p.m. Monday in Browne Auditorium, Parkinson Hall Room 124.

Rashid’s product, interior, fashion, furniture and lighting designs and art are famous the world over. A native of Cairo, Egypt, he grew up in Canada and now resides in New York. More than 2,500 objects Rashid conceived have gone into production for clients including Alessi, Dirt Devil, Umbra, Prada, Miyake, Method and numerous others.

He is the recipient of dozens of awards for his designs, including the Sleep05 European Hotel Design Award, the 2005 Pratt Legends Award, the Red Dot Design Award, and the 2007 Cooper Hewitt National Design Awards Product Design Finalist. More than a dozen museums around the globe feature his artwork in their galleries and he is the author of a number of publications about various facets of design.
