Chick-fil-A plans grand opening at Student Center

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The creation of new dining options at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Student Center will soon be complete. Chick-fil-A will host a grand opening on March 18, marking the last component of the massive Student Center Dining remodeling project begun last year.

Blimpie Subs and Salads and Chef Yan Can Cook ushered in the new food court era at the beginning of the fall 2008 semester, followed in November by Freshens Energy Zone with energy drinks and smoothies and Tomato Head Red featuring pizza and pasta. January brought the opening of Wild Greens, a soup and salad bar, and Rio Frontera with Mexican cuisine. Also, Saluki Oasis, the new convenience store located on the first floor near the main entrance, opened for business in January. Old Main Restaurant remains, as does Starbucks, McDonald’s and the home cooking of The Market Place.

The opening of the new restaurants and convenience store are all part of the Student Center’s goal of providing options desired by students and the University community, according to Lori Lynn Stettler, director of the Student Center.

During the Chick-fil-A grand opening, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., the Eat Mor Chikin Cow will welcome guests. The first 50 customers in the dining line get a free fresh-squeezed lemonade and one lucky customer will win a free classic Chick-fil-A sandwich every day for the rest of the semester. The opening will feature games and prizes too.
