Reception marks opening of two museum exhibits

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A reception at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s University Museum set for 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, opens two new exhibits.

The Visual Arts Institute exhibit, an SIUC faculty outreach program, features art created by students from Cairo High School, Eldorado High School, Harrisburg High School and Johnston City High School. Students have the opportunity to learn about art and other forms of visual expression, then use what they’ve learned to create art of their own.

The “Remembering Old Main” exhibit marks the 40th anniversary of the fire that destroyed what was at the time the oldest building on campus.

The reception is free and open to the public, though donations are always welcome.

The University Museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It is closed on Monday and during spring break. The museum store is open when the museum is open. Visit www.museum.siu.edu for more information and to print a 10 percent-off coupon for University Museum store.
