Faculty members win Arts Council fellowships

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Several faculty members at Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently earned 2009 Artists Fellowships from the Illinois Arts Council.

The recipients each receive $7,000 in recognition of outstanding work and commitment within the arts, according to information released by the Illinois Arts Council.

The SIUC recipients are:

Music Composition

• Eric Mandat, professor of clarinet, and Distinguished Scholar in the School of Music, College of Liberal Arts

• Frank Stemper, professor and Composer in Residence in the School of Music, College of Liberal Arts

Photography

• Antonio Martinez, assistant professor in cinema and photography, College of Mass Communication and Media Arts

Poetry

• Judy Jordan, assistant professor in the creative writing program in the Department of English, College of Liberal Arts

Illinois Arts Council Fellowships fund 12 artistic disciplines on a two-year rotating cycle. This year, 921 applicants sought fellowships in the areas of interdisciplinary/computer art, music composition, photography, poetry and visual arts. Next year’s areas are: choreography, crafts, ethnic and folk-arts; media arts, new performance forms, prose, and script works.
