Student Center to scare up Halloween fun

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Calling all ghouls, goblins, witches and other assorted costumed creatures. The Student Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is celebrating Halloween in style with a host of fun activities and specials.

SIUC students and staff can participate in the Craft Shop’s costume contest from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. There’s separate judging for each group. The reward for the top staff costume and top student outfit is a $25 Student Center gift card. Second prize in each division is free participation in a Craft Shop workshop. Judging will be on the basis of originality and creativity and officials note costumes must be identifiable. They’ll announce the winners at 3:30 p.m.

The Craft Shop is hosting other Halloween activities too. There’s free face painting or you can create wax hands for $3 between noon and 8:30 p.m. Other walk-in activities from 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. include making Halloween card monsters for $1 or painting wooden pumpkins for $3 each.

The Student Center’s sewing expert will be on hand to help you whip up that last-minute costume as well. To make an appointment for Halloween costume sewing basics, call 618/453-3636 in advance.

Bowling and Billiards will have cosmic bowling from 6 to 10 that evening. The student rates are $2 per game with a $1 shoe rental charge.

In addition, Halloween food specials are coming to Mainstreet Marketplace and McDonald’s on Friday.
