School of Art and Design holds annual Open Studio

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers a peek behind the scenes with its annual Open Studio on Friday, Oct. 24.

The open studio, formerly known as the “Annual Graduate Studio Walk-Through,” is an informal showcase for the nationally recognized graduate art program. Faculty, students and guests may tour the studios -- all of them or just a select few-- to see the facilities and preview some of the work SIUC students create. Refreshments are provided at each venue.

Those who bring a dish or something for the grill may hang around afterward for a potluck cookout at the Surplus Gallery at the Glove Factory (408 S. Washington). The cookout begins at 6:30 p.m.

Here is the schedule:

Foundry -- 3:30 p.m.

The Foundry complex includes two, large metal buildings at the corner of West Pleasant Hill Road and Reservoir Road (between Evergreen Park and U.S. Highway 51). The Foundry complex allows for ferrous and nonferrous metal-casting techniques. Students may use concrete pads and an adjacent grass and wooded area to display large sculpture.

Pulliam Hall -- 4:15 p.m.

The Industrial Wing of Pulliam Hall is home to the ceramics, glass and metalsmithing/blacksmithing programs.

Metals House -- 5 p.m.

The Metals House, at 805 S. Oakland Ave., has studio space for graduate students in metalsmithing and shared studio space for undergraduate students.

Glove Factory -- 5:45 p.m.

The Glove Factory studio used to be the Good Luck Glove Co. Now it is home to the Surplus Gallery, a woodworking shop, welding area, classrooms and studio space.
