Free depression, anxiety screenings planned

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- In conjunction with National Depression Screening Day, free, anonymous mental health screenings for depression and anxiety disorders will be available at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Friday, Oct. 10. The Student Health Center Wellness Center, in collaboration with the Counseling Center, will offer the screenings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Student Health Center and at the Student Health Assessment Center office within the Student Center.

Anxiety and depression are the most common and yet most treatable mental health issues college students face. These conditions can interfere with academic success.

The confidential screenings are open to anyone on the SIUC campus on a walk-in basis -- no appointment needed. It just takes about 10 minutes. Students are eligible for further services and screeners will offer referrals for others participating in the screening if needed.

For more information, contact Barb Elam, interim assistant director of the Wellness Center, at 618/536-4441.
