Registration open for Young Artists’ Workshop

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Saturday Young Artists’ Workshop at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is open for registration.

This year’s theme is “Portrait Studio.” The program is open to all ages, from kindergarten through high school seniors. Students work within age group divisions, using various age-appropriate media to create a variety of portraits or sculptures. Students will learn techniques to create facial expressions as they produce self-portraits or representations of friends or family members.

Sally Gradle, assistant professor of art education and head of undergraduate studies in the School of Art and Design, coordinates the program. “We’re really enthusiastic to offer this to the community,” she said. “It also furthers our art education program by giving our art education majors the opportunity to work closely with and teach younger students.”

The cost to attend the program is $40 for one student, or $70 for two in one family. Students meet from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on consecutive Saturday mornings beginning Sept. 6 and concluding Oct. 25. Pre-register by calling 618/453-4315.
