Volunteers needed to assist with student move-in

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- It’s almost back-to-school time at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Week of Welcome is fast approaching and now is the time for faculty, staff, registered student organizations, community members and business representatives to volunteer a few hours of their time to serve as Honorary Student Life Advisors (SLA) to assist new students with the move-in process.

It’s a chance to demonstrate the friendly, welcoming nature of the University. Honorary SLAs have been an important part of the move-in process and welcoming activities at SIUC since 1985.

University Housing has implemented a new initiative that allows new students to move in on Thursday or Friday, Aug. 14 or 15. Honorary SLAs will work in one of the residence hall areas between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, and/or on Friday, Aug. 15, between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers can work on one or both days for as long as they’re willing and able to help.

Participants get a T-shirt and a “Saluki Mover” button nametag. An informational meeting at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in the Student Center’s Mississippi Room will offer details about the move-in day activities and the honorary SLAs can pick up their shirts and assignments.

Honorary SLAs must sign up with New Student Programs no later than Friday, Aug. 8. The registration form is online at https://ugadm2.admissions.siu.edu/forms/soar/honor.html. For more information, contact Brittany McElroy, coordinator of New Student Programs, at 618/453-7510 or via e-mail at bmcelroy@siu.edu.
