Finance professor, doctoral student win awards

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale Henry J. Rehn Professor of Finance Wallace N. Davidson and doctoral student Vaibhav Sharma won the Best Paper and Best Presentation awards during the 2008 Academic Business World International Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

“It’s an honor for me,” said Sharma, whose paper is entitled “Executive Compensation Following Spin-Offs.”

“I’m not surprised that Vaibhav was singled out for these awards. He is a fine scholar with a bright future,” said Davidson.

The Academic Business World sponsors an annual international conference for the exchange of research ideas and practices within business disciplines, learning and administration. The aim of the Academic Business World International Conferences is to provide a forum for the discussion of research within business and reference disciplines in education and the social sciences as well as research and experiences in learning and administration in higher education.

Davidson received the 2007 SIUC "Excellence Through Commitment" award. He teaches corporate finance, working capital management, capital budgeting, financial statement analysis, financial theory and security valuation.

Davidson has produced many continuing education seminars and online classes for the Professional Development Institute and American Institute of CPAs.

Davidson earned bachelor's and master's degrees in 1974 and 1976 from Wright State University in Ohio and a doctorate in 1982 from The Ohio State University.

Sharma holds a bachelor’s degree from De Montfort University and an MBA from The Indian Institute of Planning and Management.
