Annual fireworks display set for Friday night

by Pete Rosenbery

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The annual Fourth of July fireworks in Carbondale will light up the sky with spectacular bursts of color later this week.

Set for Friday, July 4, the show always draws a large crowd, so people planning to attend the festivities should arrive early.

The fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m. at the Abe Martin baseball field at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, south of the SIU Arena.

Admission is free.

Parking is available in the Arena parking lots. Parking in lots 52 and 37, west of the Arena along Douglas Drive, is also available. Police will restrict traffic along Saluki Drive near the baseball field during the fireworks display, and close the intersections of U.S. 51 and Saluki Drive, and West Pleasant Hill Road and Arena Drive, to incoming traffic during the show.

The rain date for fireworks is Saturday, July 5.

The Carbondale Lions’ Club sponsors the fireworks show.

University policies prohibit alcohol, glass, pets or fireworks at the event.
