Cinema and Photography honors 21 students

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Twenty-one outstanding students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Department of Cinema and Photography recently earned scholarships and received awards for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Here is a list of scholarship winners, by hometown. Where available, the listing contains the winner's name, year in school, major, scholarship name, the amount, and a bit of background on the award. The awards were presented to students in April.

Illinois

Belleville: Damon J. Taylor, junior, cinema. Robert Dennis Film Making Award, $400. The award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for their accomplishment in cinematography over the past year.

Bethalto: Jennifer L. Haselhorst, senior, photography. William Horrel Memorial Award, $100. Presented to an outstanding undergraduate student for accomplishment in documentary photography and/or photojournalism in the past year.

Brookfield: John E. Petrenko, senior, photography. Photography Production Award, $100. Presented to an undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in photography in the past year.

Chatsworth: Dan Boomgarden, May 2007 graduate with bachelor's degree in Cinema & Photography, c inema. $1,000 Blumenberg Screenwriting Award. Awarded for his script submitted for review for the competition.

Decatur: Amanda Lowe, senior, photography. Paul Harum Memorial Award, $100. Presented to an undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in photography in the past year.

Elgin: Douglas C. Schneider, senior, cinema. Dr. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $50. Presented to outstanding cinema production students for their work in the past year.

Lacon: Andrew D. Crook, senior, photography. Photography Outstanding Scholar Award, $100. Presented to a photography student for outstanding scholarly accomplishment in the past year.

Monticello: Jason M. Bennett, senior, cinema. Dr. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $50. Presented to outstanding cinema production students for their work in the past year.

Mt. Olive: Rose R. Odorizzi, junior, photography. Mary Green Memorial Award, $100. Presented to an undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in photography in the past year.

Newton: Ryan J. Britton, sophomore, cinema. Cinema Production Award, $100. The award goes to a beginning level undergraduate student for outstanding accomplishment in the early film production classes this year.

Olney: Brian A. Wilson, graduate student, master of fine arts, Mass Communication and Media Arts, Cinema Outstanding Scholar Award, $50. Presented to a graduate cinema studies student for outstanding scholarly accomplishment in the past year.

Peoria: Jaime Moss, senior, cinema. Loren Cocking Animation Award, $100. The award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for accomplishment in animation in the past year, and is based on Moss' work in computer animation.

Pittsfield: Kyle W. Frere, junior, photography. David Gilmore Award, $250. Presented to an outstanding photography student in the past year.

Springfield: Elizabeth C. Malmevik, senior, cinema. Dr. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $50. Presented to outstanding cinema production students for their work in the past year.

Alex J. Wasilewski, senior, photography. Kodak Professional Imaging Award, $1,000. Presented to an outstanding undergraduate student based on academic and professional excellence in the past year.

Hawaii

Aiea: Josh E. Denmark, senior, photography. Charles Swedlund Award, $250. Presented to an outstanding photography student in the past year.

Indiana

Greencastle: Christopher A. McCastle, senior, cinema. Liz Ralston Cinema Production Award, $750. The award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for innovative accomplishment in the past year.

Newburgh: Andrea L. White, senior, triple degree student in cinema and theater, with a second major in history. Robert Dennis Film Making Award, $350. The award goes to an outstanding student filmmaker for their accomplishment in cinematography over the past year.

Kentucky

Bardstown: John Colin Gritton, senior, cinema. Cinema Outstanding Scholar Award, $50. Presented to an undergraduate cinema studies student for outstanding scholarly accomplishment in the past year.

Nebraska

Valentine: Thomas R.J. Benson, senior, cinema. Film Processing FotoKem Award. Awarded to a student who has film projects in production and are of exceptional promise.

Wisconsin

Greenfield: Kyle G. Dean, senior, cinema. Dr. John C. Mercer Scholarship Award, $50. Presented to outstanding cinema production students for their work in the past year.
