'Moonlight Canoeing' starts April 20

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Recreational Sports and Services is welcoming warmer temperatures with a series of "Moonlight Canoeing" events, free and open to the general public.

The full moon's light is the signal for the canoeing events set for April 20, May 20, June 18, July 18, Aug. 16, Sept. 15 and Oct. 14. Each night from 8 to 10, anyone with a valid photo identification may enjoy a free ride in a canoe or paddleboat at the Lake-on-the-Campus Boat Dock. Each watercraft holds two-four people.

Moonlight canoeing is a popular SIUC attraction, drawing up to 120 or more participants to its previous 10 outings. Organizers don't accept reservations but loan canoes and paddleboats on a first-come, first-served basis.
