Glass artists to lecture, demonstrate their craft

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Glass Works and the glass department in the School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale welcome glass artists Boyd Sugiki and Lisa Zerkowitz to campus.

The artists will present demonstrations of their glass-blowing techniques and offer a lecture presentation with slides of their work during their stay. Demonstrations are from 9 a.m. to noon April 7-9 in the glass studio of Pulliam Hall Industrial Wing. The lecture begins at 6 p.m. on April 8 at the University Museum Auditorium.

Sugiki is known for his functional glass works, including striped bowls and cocktail sets. His combination of utilitarian form and rich hues make his work both beautiful and usable. He recently had a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Museum at the First Hawaiian Center in Honolulu. His work is also included in several Seattle area galleries, along with Zerkowitz's work.

Zerkowitz is known for her blown-glass beach balls as well as for her kiln glass sculptures. She is a third-generation glass artist.

Demonstrations and the lecture are free and open to the public.
