Anna students to participate in museum program

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Students from Davie School in Anna are the first group of four from area high schools and middle schools to participate in this year's ARTiculation program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale's University Museum.

Approximately 40 students will arrive at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, to tour the museum and make sketches from the exhibits. They will be on campus until about 1:30 p.m., including a break for lunch and a visit to the Surplus Gallery in the Glove Factory on Washington Avenue.

Museum education coordinator Robert DeHoet said the students will return to their school with their sketches. They will use the sketches to create their own art as variations on the themes and art they found in the museum.

"The art in the museum provides the foundation for their own work," DeHoet said. "So it is art appreciation as well as creating art."

Students from Harrisburg High School, Vergennes Elementary School and Zeigler-Royalton High School are also planning on similar museum excursions, DeHoet said.
