Ballroom dancing classes start in January

by Hillary Popejoy

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Dancing is an art that never goes out of style, but it doesn't come naturally to everyone. The Division of Continuing Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is offering two levels of classes so participants can learn, hone or practice their ballroom dancing skills.

The Beginning Ballroom Dancing class gives a quick introduction to a variety of basic foxtrot, waltz and tango steps. Participants will learn proper dance techniques and how to lead or follow.

Those with a bit of experience will enjoy Beyond Beginner Ballroom Dancing. Sessions will expand upon what participants learn in beginning ballroom dance classes. Dancers will learn advanced techniques used in the six most common ballroom dances

Each class meets weekly for six weeks at Pulliam Gym on the SIUC campus. The beginning dance class meets on Tuesdays while the 'Beyond Beginner" classes meet on Monday. All classes run from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Registration is $30 per person for each of the class sessions.

The spring ballroom dance class schedule includes:

• Beginning Ballroom Dancing: Session 1 from Jan. 29 through March 4, Session 2 from March 18 through April 22.

• Beyond Beginner Ballroom Dancing: Session 1 from Jan. 28 through March 3, Session 2 from March 17 through April 22.

To register or obtain more information about the classes, contact the Division of Continuing Education at 618/536-7751 or look online at www.dce.siu.edu. Walk-in registrations are acceptable at the door too.
