CARBONDALE, Ill. — Just for a moment, think about the possibilities of a Christmas 2007 gift meant to be used in April 2008. Now that's thinking ahead. But for the right gift, that kind of forethought is pure genius.

Tickets are on sale now for the upcoming Emmanuel Ax concert at Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Shryock Auditorium. Savvy shoppers can snag the best seats now, cross a few people off their Christmas gift lists, and relax knowing that, on April 1, with Christmas both past and present a distant blur, the people on their special gift list are getting a reprise of Holiday cheer.

What's the big deal about Emmanuel Ax – besides his seven Grammies? Those in the know when it comes to classical music need not ask. Just that someone as world-famous, as celebrated for virtuosity, as in demand as Ax, is coming here, to Carbondale. His usual venues are in such places as New York, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, St. Louis, or further abroad – London, Edinburgh, Berlin, Hamburg, Brussels, Milan, Paris, Madrid. After all, April 1 may very well be the only time ever in history that Emmanuel Ax performs in Southern Illinois.

For those to whom classical music is more of a mystery, a simple Internet search should be sufficient for an understanding that here is someone worth seeing. Ax collaborates frequently (and has won three Grammies) with Yo-Yo Ma, the famous cellist whose name is known even in pop circles. He is working with actor Patrick Stewart ("X-Men," "Star Trek," "The Dame Edna Treatment") on a Richard Strauss melodrama with narration for Sony BMG.

For the general public, tickets are $55. Students, especially, have a great opportunity with this visit to SIUC. For student tickets, the concert price is only $10.

Order tickets online through Ticketmaster at http://www.siu.edu/~shryock/ or in person at the SIU Arena ticket office or by calling 618/453-2000.
