Saluki Family Weekend set for Oct. 19-21
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Get ready, Carbondale – the weekend of Oct. 19-21 the town will be crawling with Salukis visiting Southern Illinois University Carbondale during Saluki Family Weekend.
Saluki Family Weekend is for currently enrolled students and their families. It's a chance for the whole family to experience some of the perks that come with attending SIUC, including cultural and sporting events, a beautiful campus and a dynamic, small-city environment.
One family will get extra special treatment as winners of the Family of the Weekend contest. The contest prize package includes two nights stay at Little Grassy Lodge at Touch of Nature Environmental Center, Saluki gear and tickets to the Saluki Family Association Breakfast Buffet. Families can enter the contest by taking an online trivia test at www.salukifamily.siu.edu. Contest participants can also print the questionnaire and fax it to New Student Programs at 618/453-2109. The deadline is Oct. 12. (Here's a hint: answers to the questions are found in other pages throughout the SIUC Web site.)
Families can purchase tickets for the various events through the Student Central Ticket Office on the second floor of the Student Center or by calling 618/453-3478.
A schedule of events and opportunities follows. Events and times are subject to change. In most cases, special rates and offers apply to families who are accompanied by a student with a current SIUC ID card:
Friday, Oct. 19
• Student Recreation Center, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., free use for Saluki families.
• Bowling and billiards, 9 a.m. to midnight, Student Center, half price for Saluki families.
• Family Weekend craft sale, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Student Center, sponsored by the Student Center Craft Shop. Regional vendors offer wares.
• Boat docks, noon to 6 p.m., Campus Lake, free paddleboat, canoe and rowboat rental, weather permitting, for Saluki families.
• Student Programming Council film "Hairspray," 7 and 9:30 p.m. showings, Student Center, tickets are $3 for SIUC students and children 10 and under and $4 for general public.
• Golden Dragon Acrobats, 7:30 p.m., Shryock Auditorium, tickets through Ticketmaster or Student Central Ticket Office, reserved seats are $30, $25 or $10 for adults, $25, $20, or $5 for SIUC students and for children 12 years old and younger.
Saturday, Oct. 20
• Student Recreation Center, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., free use for Saluki families.
• Southern Illinois High School Reception for high school seniors from Southern Illinois and the greater St. Louis area. Program begins at 10 a.m. at the Hiram H. Lesar Law Building and includes a free tailgate lunch. Game tickets are available on a limited, first-come, first-served basis, three per participant.
• Family Weekend registration area, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Student Center, east entrance. Sign in, get the latest weekend updates, register to win door prizes and enjoy free refreshments. Sponsored by the Student Programming Council Special Events Committee.
• Saluki Family Association Breakfast, 9 to 11 a.m., Student Center Ballroom B. A welcome program and a breakfast buffet. Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for SIUC students and seniors age 60 and over, and $7 for children ages 4 to 9. Day-of-event tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for students and seniors age 60 and over and $8 for children. Sponsored by the Saluki Family Association.
• Campus tours, 45-minute tram tour narrated by student tour guides, first-come, first-served, trams leave at 9, 10 and 11 a.m.
• Family Weekend craft sale, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Student Center, regional vendors offer wares. Sponsored by the Student Center Craft Shop.
• Raku pottery firing, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., make your own souvenir by glazing a ceramic vessel and then watch it fired Raku style. $3 each. Sponsored by the Student Center Craft Shop.
• Bowling and billiards, 10 a.m. to midnight, Student Center, half price for Saluki families.
• Saluki Family Tailgate, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saluki Row, south of McAndrew Stadium. Carbondale Mainstreet, Carbondale Community Arts and the Saluki Pride committee sponsor Saluki families at a prime spot on Saluki Row for art projects, jazz band, game, inflatable bouncy things, hotdogs and more. • Pre-game tailgate activities, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., parking lots near McAndrew Stadium.
• Annual Inter-Greek Council Greek Sing, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., steps of Shryock Auditorium, members of SIUC fraternities and sororities in a competitive singing event, sponsored by IGC. Rain location is Student Center.
• University Housing Residence Hall dining, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lentz and Trueblood dining halls, brunch with the students. Come back for dinner between 4 and 7 p.m. Tickets available at each dining hall for each meal at $6, all you can eat. Sponsored by University Housing Residence Hall Dining.

• Saluki Dinner Buffet, 5 to 7 p.m. Student Center ballrooms, multi-entrée buffet with desert station and beverages. Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for SIUC students and seniors age 60 and over, and $7 for children ages 4 to 9; tickets day of event are $13 for adults, $12 for SIUC students and seniors age 60 and over and $8 for students 4 to 9 years old. Sponsored by the Student Center SPACE and Student Center Dining Specialties.
• Student Programming Council film "Hairspray," 7 and 9:30 p.m. showings, Student Center, tickets are $3 for SIUC students and children aged 10 and under and $4 for general public.
• Marching Salukis in Concert, 8 p.m., Shryock Auditorium. The Marching Salukis liven up football and basketball home games, Missouri Valley tournaments and NCAA March Madness. Here they are on their own, presenting music from the 2007 halftime shows, school spirits and more. Free admission. Sponsored by the SIUC School of Music.

• Autumn Harvest Brunch Buffet, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Student Center ballrooms, a new tradition for the Saluki Family Weekend with lunch and breakfast items, including a French toast station and hot mulled cider. Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for SIUC students and seniors age 60 and over and $7 for children ages 4 to 9. Day-of-event tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for SIUC students and seniors age 60 and over and $8 for children ages 4 to 9. Sponsored by Student Center SPACE and Student Center Dining Services.
