SIU Foundation board adds two new members

by Greg Scott

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Two alumni of Southern Illinois University Carbondale have joined the SIU Foundation Board of Directors. Both are serving three-year terms that conclude on June 30, 2010.

Howard M. Spiegel, a 1975 graduate, and Marvin Kaiser, a 1963 alumnus, are the newest members of the foundation's volunteer board.

The board governs the SIU Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni and friends a means to invest in the University's future. Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers gifts from private sources in support of the University's academic mission. Private funding is generated through annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and foundation relations and campaigns.

Spiegel, a Buffalo Grove resident, is a field representative for Arrow Electronics, a Fortune 500 company in Itasca with sales of $12.6 billion in 2006. He is also a member of the select Arrow Pacesetter Team, an honor given to less than 1 percent of Arrow employees nationwide. The University presented Spiegel with an Alumni Achievement Award in 2004 in honor of his professional accomplishments.

A life member of the SIU Alumni Association, Spiegel has been an at-large member of the Alumni Association's board of directors since 2003. His commitment to the University also includes his service on the Chicagoland Advisory Board and the College of Liberal Arts Alumni Society Board. Spiegel is a longtime beer vendor for Chicago Cubs games at Wrigley Field. He and his wife, Karri, have three children and live in Buffalo Grove.

Kaiser was inducted into the SIU Carbondale College of Business and Administration Hall of Fame in 1990. He retired in 2006 as executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Doe Run Co., a St. Louis-based and privately held international resources company.

Kaiser's career also included stints as chief financial officer of Amax Gold Inc., and senior vice president and chief financial officer of Olympic Mining Corp. and Ranchers Exploration. He currently serves on the boards of Apollo Gold Corp. and Constellation Copper Corp.

The Mayfield, Ky., resident has served on the University's School of Accountancy Board of Advisors since 1988, assuming the board chair role in 2005. Kaiser is a member of the COBA Rehn Society, recognition for his support of the college. He and his wife, Melanie, are both life members of the SIU Alumni Association and have six grown children.

Rickey N. McCurry, vice chancellor for institutional advancement and CEO of the SIU Foundation, said each will be an asset to the foundation board.

"Howard and Marvin are already deeply committed to our University and take great pride in being Salukis," McCurry said. "I'm pleased that both gentlemen have agreed to serve on our board. SIU Carbondale will benefit as a result."
