SIUC sets ballroom dance classes

by Hillary Popejoy

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Twirling around on the dance floor never goes out of style but dancing doesn't always come naturally. The Division of Continuing Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is offering dancing help and a venue with ballroom dance classes.

Beginning Ballroom Dancing gives a quick introduction to a variety of basic foxtrot, waltz and tango steps. Participants will learn lead-follow and proper dance techniques. Those with a bit of experience will enjoy Beyond Beginner Ballroom Dancing. Sessions will expand on the beginning ballroom dance class instruction and teach advanced techniques used in the six most common ballroom dances.

All classes meet weekly for six weeks from 7-8:30 p.m. at Davies Gym on the SIUC campus. The beginning ballroom dancing classes meet each Tuesday while the 'beyond beginner' classes meet Mondays with the exception of Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Registration is $30 per person, per class.

The fall ballroom dance class schedule is:

• Beginning Ballroom Dancing: Session I is Aug. 28- Oct. 2. Session II is Oct. 9- Nov. 13.

• Beyond Beginner Ballroom Dancing: Session I is Aug. 27-Oct. 6. Session II is Oct. 15-Nov. 26.

For more information or to register contact the Division of Continuing Education at 618/536-7751 or look online at www.dce.siu.edu. Walk-in registrations are acceptable at the door too.
