Media Advisory – Summer Camps

The summer 2007 camp season at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is wrapping up in coming weeks, but there are still opportunities for reporters, photographers and camera crews to find interesting summer activity stories. The youth camps, coordinated with the assistance of SIUC's Division of Continuing Education, include diverse opportunities for engaging stories, photographs, and video.

The camp schedule, brief descriptions, favorable times to catch notable stories and contact information for each camp follow.

• High School Architecture is July 15-20 while Kid Architecture is July 23-27. Jon Davey, an architecture professor at SIUC, leads both camps. He's in his 27th year teaching design at the University and his 19th year working with the award-winning camps that introduce young people to the design of the built environment. The camps include field trips, guest speakers, special activities and hands-on projects. There also are workshops sponsored by the Southern Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the School of Architecture and the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, in cooperation with the Division of Continuing Education.

About 25 high school architecture campers will cast one-foot square concrete stepping stones with "Gaudi' mosaics from 10 to 11 a.m. on July 17 in SIUC parking lot 100, located at the corner of Washington and Mill streets. Kid Architecture's 20 campers will do the same thing at the same location from 10 to 11 a.m. July 24.
