Media Advisory – Broadcast News Camp

Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Department of Radio and Television is hosting 10 students from East St. Louis High School in a weeklong television news camp.

Students are receiving a basic look into the intricacies of television and broadcast news operations from faculty members Jim Gee, Joey Helleny and Eileen Waldron. The activities include reporting, news writing, and shooting and editing video.

Reporters and photographers are welcome to cover the students' efforts as they write and edit their work in WSIU-TV's newsroom from 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, July 12. The working media is also welcome to cover the students presenting their stories in live-to-tape newscasts from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at WSIU-TV.

This is the first year for the camp. Gee, news director for WSIU-TV's nationally recognized River Region Evening Edition, said the camp is successful.

"It is a great experience. I think the kids are getting a lot out of it," he said.
