Harvel receives Rendleman Scholarship to SIUC

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Rachel Marie Harvel, a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, is this year's recipient of the Dr. David F. and Mrs. Mary G. Rendleman Pre-Med Scholarship Award at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Harvel, the daughter of Michael and Kimberly Harvel of Anna, will attend SIUC this fall majoring in biological sciences. She graduated from high school in May.

The scholarship, established in 2005, goes to an Anna-Jonesboro graduate who demonstrates financial need, volunteerism and community service. Students also must demonstrate academic achievement qualifying them for the SIU pre-med program. In the event no students from that school meet the requirements, students from other Union County schools become eligible to compete for the award.

The Rendlemans, longtime residents of Union County, set up the award to assist talented students from their home county pursue careers in the medical field. It provides $1,000 each semester and is renewable for up to four consecutive years, as long as the student maintains a B average and continues to major in pre-med.

Dr. Rendleman graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School and SIU before going on to practice general surgery in the area. He is a former member of the SIU Foundation Board of Directors, and both he and his wife are founding members of the SIU President's Council.

Harvel amassed an impressive list of accomplishments as a high school student. She was a three-year member of the Beta Club, a four-year Student Council member and was named to the National Honor Society her junior and senior years. She was an Illinois State Scholar and was named outstanding senior in her class, among other accolades and achievements.
