Daily Egyptian honors five staff members

by Pete Rosenbery

CARBONDALE -- The Daily Egyptian, the student newspaper at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, honored five staff members recently for their contributions to the award-winning publication's success.

The paper, which publishes five days a week while classes are in session, circulates on the SIUC campus and throughout Southern Illinois. It employs about 100 students, including journalists, photojournalists, advertising sales and production and business office workers.

Here is a list of those receiving recognition:

• Carbondale: Matthew C. Dreuth, Best Supporting Role

Dreuth, a senior in accounting, has worked as payroll clerk for three semesters, since April 2006. Among his various duties are payroll for more than 100 employees, ensuring correct billing for all ads, tracking vehicle mileage and long-distance usage and other assorted jobs at the newspaper. He graduates this month and plans to pursue a master's degree in accounting and CPA certification. He is the son of SIUC professors Laura Dreuth-Zeman and Marvin Zeman of Carbondale.

  • Godfrey: Andrea J. Zimmermann, Newsroom Outstanding Senior of the Year

Working at the Daily Egyptian for four years, Zimmermann, who graduates this month, was editor-in-chief for the fall 2006 semester. She was a reporter this semester, and her assignments included covering Carbondale's mayoral race. She plans to attend the Public Affairs Reporting graduate school program at the University of Illinois-Springfield this fall. She is the daughter of David J. and Jane E. Zimmermann (2006 Northwood Drive).

  • Green Creek: Amber Kinkelaar, Advertising Rookie of the Year.

Kinkelaar, a senior, is pursuing a double degree in administration of justice and psychology. Her goal is to be a fundraising director for an educational institution or children's hospital, or motivational speaker. She has worked at the DE since summer 2006, and also worked at the Effingham Daily News. She is graduating later this month, but will be attending graduate school at SIUC. She is the daughter of Gerald and Susan Kinkelaar of Effingham.

• Kankakee: Marques R. Anderson, Advertising Outstanding Senior

Anderson, a senior in journalism, began at the Daily Egyptian in February 2004, served as campus advertising representative and was promoted to student advertising manager in fall 2006. He was recently named one of SIUC's Most Distinguished Seniors. He graduates this month and in June, will join a Chicago advertising agency — where he had served as an intern — as a junior account executive. He is the son of David A. and Chaquida Y. Anderson (385 N. Adams St.).

  • Venedy: Sarah E. Lohman, Newsroom Rookie of the Year.

Lohman, a sophomore in the news/editorial journalism sequence with a minor in psychology, is in her second semester at the Daily Egyptian, where she is assistant campus editor and covers the chancellor's office, along with University Housing, enrollment, and library affairs. After graduation she plans to attend graduate school and then work as a newspaper reporter. She is the daughter of Robert and Carol Lohman (1604 County Highway 6).
