Community college scholarship recipients named
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale is making it a little easier for 39 top community college students to pursue four-year degrees.
Illinois Community College Scholarships were announced this spring for outstanding students from community colleges in Illinois who will attend SIUC this fall. Community college presidents submitted ranked lists of up to five outstanding students who indicated they would transfer to SIUC. Only the top two students were guaranteed scholarships.
Terri Harfst, academic scholarship coordinator in SIUC's financial aid office, said additional funding, if available, would be applied to scholarships for the remaining students.
This year, all students recommended for the scholarship who held a 3.5 grade point average and met admission criteria received funds. The scholarships are a minimum of $1,000 a year for two years.
SIUC created the scholarships in 2004 as part of its outreach to community colleges in Illinois. The university annually welcomes more than 2,300 transfer students.
