Engineering students win scholarships

by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A student in the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale won a prestigious scholarship during a national competition for heating, refrigeration and air conditioning students.

Two other students also won scholarships during the regional competition last month in St. Louis, hosted by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

The students are part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Energy Processes at SIUC.

Eric K. White, a senior from Carbondale, won one of two National General Scholarships awarded by the group. The scholarship is worth $3,000.

White also won a $600 scholarship at the St. Louis regional competition. Tushar Gadge, and Bhushan Pendse, both graduate students, each won $375 scholarships at the competition.

The group based the awards on its evaluation of the students' cumulative grade point average, letters of recommendations and essays. The application process vetted the students' character, scholastic and leadership abilities and their likelihood for success in the industry.
