SIUC aviation students earn scholarships

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Fifteen students enrolled in Southern Illinois University Carbondale's aviation program received scholarships for the fall 2006 semester.

Students learned of the honors during the annual fall aviation banquet on Oct. 20. The Aviation Management Society, an SIUC registered student organization, sponsors the banquet. Some of the scholarships honor SIUC graduates and all support students enrolled in the aviation program.

The program is part of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The students received more than $31,000 in scholarships during "Aviation in the Future" banquet.

Phil Boyer, president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the largest general aviation pilots' organization in the nation, delivered the keynote address. Approximately 265 people attended the annual banquet.

Illinois

Algonquin: Jennifer L. Byrne, junior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $1,000. Byrne is the daughter of Scott and Darcy Byrne (625 Gaslight Drive).

Bartlett: Jeffrey D. Jaynes, senior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $1,000. Jaynes is the son of Dennis and Patricia Jaynes (1341 Richmond Lane).

Chicago: Lukasz Zagrodny, senior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $4,000. Zagrodny is the son of Henryk and Genowefa Zagrodny (5501 N. Lotus Ave.)

Fairview Heights: Benjamin D. Woods, senior in aviation management, Jerry L. Kennedy Aviation Career Advancement Scholarship, $6,093, and Joseph A. Messina II Aviation Explorers Scholarship, $2,500. Woods is the son of Dennis and Kathy Woods (9451 Holy Cross Road).

Liberty: Garrett R. Gieker junior in aviation management, William R. Norwood Aviation Scholarship, $500. Gieker is the son of Gary and Valerie Gieker (900 Crystal Court).

Lombard: Mark T. Freeze, junior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $3,000. Freeze is the son of Betty Freeze (113 E. Goebel Dr.)

McHenry: Sabrina J. Weber, senior in aviation management, William R. Norwood Aviation Scholarship, $1,000. Weber is the daughter of Richard and Debra Weber-Stokes (106 Glenbrook Trail).

Naperville: Christopher Q. James, senior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $5,000. James is the son of Jay and Annette James (939 Leverenz Road).

Riverwoods: Jonathan A. Joseph, junior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $1,000. Joseph is the son of Ashur and Diane Joseph (880 Portwine Road).

Rochelle: Kristopher J. Mear, senior in aviation flight, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $1,000. Mear is the son of James E. Mear and Tammy J. Barstow (10105 Rain Dance Dr.).

Rolling Meadows: Katie M. Lake, senior in aviation flight, William S. Arnott Scholarship, awarded by the United Airlines Historical Foundation, $1,500. Lake is the daughter of Ken and Sue Lake (3903 Raven Lane).

Somonauk: Trenton C. Kessler, junior in aviation management, Michael R. Peters – Aviation Interviews.com Aviation Scholarship, $1,000. Kessler is the son of Marla Alstadt of Somonauk (465 E. Market) and Chuck Kessler of Sandwich (14598 Chicago Road).

St. Charles: Christine E. Zoerlein, junior in aviation flight, Matthew K. Meier 'Faith, Family, Friendship, Fortitude, Future' Aviation Management Scholarship, $1,500. Zoerlein is the daughter of Stephen and Patricia Zoerlein (6N618 Heritage Court).

Wadsworth: Ashley A. Bennett, senior in aviation management, William R. Norwood Aviation Scholarship, $500. Bennett is the son of Willie and Mary Bennett, (14190 Wadsworth Road).

Iowa

Lisbon: Christopher A. Butler, senior in aviation management, Joseph A. Messina II Aviation Explores Scholarship, $1,000. Butler is the son of Ron Butler and Betty Weimer (515 N. Washington St.).

Strengthening the undergraduate scholarship program is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
