Girls will explore science and math careers

by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A daylong conference at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will help girls explore careers in science and math.

The 16th annual Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics Conference is set for Saturday. Oct. 28. Organizers expect several hundred junior high-aged girls from throughout the area to attend, as well as many teachers and parents.

Media advisory: Reporters, photographers and camera crews are invited to cover the various events associated with the conference, which starts at 9:15 a.m. and runs through 2 p.m. at the SIUC Student Center and campus.

The event features more than 30 professionals from the University, surrounding community colleges and companies who will plan and coordinate various hands-on science and math workshops. The activities will increase girls’ awareness of career opportunities in those areas and provide them with female role models. Each girl will participate in three workshops.

Offering education and training activities for a variety of pre-adult age groups is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
