Homecoming parade draws large crowd

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The 2006 edition of Homecoming at Southern Illinois University Carbondale — "Sacks, Dawgs & Rock 'n Roll," drew an estimated 15,000 people to the parade route in Carbondale on Saturday morning, Oct. 7.

The 70 units in the parade featured 2,500 participants. There were 18 high schools and junior high bands, with 1,200 participants.

Here are the parade winners:

Class A Bands (351 school enrollment or higher)

First place: Carbondale Community High School

Second place: Harrisburg High School

Third place: Carterville High School

Class B bands (350 or less school enrollment)

First place: Gallatin County High School

Second place: Chester High School

Third place: Christopher High School

Class C Bands: (Middle schools or junior high schools)

First place: Harrisburg Middle School

Second place: Benton Grade School

Third place: Du Quoin Middle School

Small Float Units:

First place: Theta Xi

Second place: Sigma Alpha and Phi Kappa Tau

Third place: Student Center Craft Shop

Marching Units:

First place: Saluki Rainbow Network

Second place: Fatal Fusion Dance Group

Third place: Girl Scouts of Jackson County

Car/Truck Units:

First place: Girl Scout Troop #198

Second place: Murphysboro Applefest Queen

Third place: WCIL-FM

Large Float Units:

First place: Sigma Pi & Alpha Gamma Delta

Second place: Alpha Tau Omega and Fashion Design & Merchandising Association

Third place: Sigma Kappa and Delta Chi

Creating and supporting traditions that foster a lifelong attachment to the University are among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
