Campus Safety Alert Southern Illinois University Carbondale Oct. 9, 2006

Southern Illinois University Carbondale police are investigating a battery and attempted robbery that occurred at about 11:08 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, on the east side of the Allen Hall III residence hall on the east side of campus.

A 22-year-old SIUC student told police he was walking on the sidewalk near the steps east of Allen Hall III when a black male wearing an orange Houston Astros jersey approached and asked the victim for a cigarette. After being told by the victim he didn't have one, the suspect responded, "Don't take this the wrong way; give me your wallet." Two more black males then appeared and started to pat the victim down looking for a wallet.

The victim pulled the wallet from his pocket and was holding it when the three suspects began punching him in the head. The victim and the suspects all fell to the ground and one of the suspects had the victim's wallet, while another punched the victim on the top and side of the victim's head. As the victim was trying to get away, a passerby walking down the sidewalk interrupted the attack and the three suspects left the area.

The victim found his wallet dropped by one of the suspects. Nothing was reported missing. The victim declined medical assistance.

The victim described one of the suspects as 6 feet, 150 pounds, wearing an orange Houston Astros baseball jersey. The victim said the other two suspects were wearing black hooded sweatshirts with hats worn to the right; one suspect was 6 feet, 200 pounds; the other, 6 feet, 150 pounds.
