Kreher joins journalism school faculty
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A woman with 20 years of experience in print and broadcast advertising is the newest addition to the faculty in the School of Journalism in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Vicki L. Kreher is an assistant lecturer in Advertising and Integrated Marketing Communication. She teaches a course in creative advertising strategies and a general survey course on media for non-majors.
A St. Louis native, Kreher graduated from SIUC in 1986, working in the local media market while she finished her degree. During the next two decades she worked in advertising at several local newspapers, a television station and several radio stations. She also worked at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a chain of suburban St. Louis newspapers.
“I enjoy being in the academic environment,” said Kreher, of Carbondale. “The students in my classes are motivated. They want to be challenged and expect it and they are involved in their own education, which is so thrilling.
“I’m having a wonderful time,” she said.
Kreher specializes in writing copy for advertisements, design and layout and sales. She hopes to use her long experience in the industry to benefit students. One way she is doing this involves connecting students with her former local clients to work on advertising campaigns for their class projects.
“Hopefully it’s giving them a taste of what it’s really like,” she said.
Recruiting and retaining high quality faculty, offering strong hiring packages and passionately recruiting candidates from diverse backgrounds are among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
