Students honored for environmental efforts
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Center for Environmental Health and Safety honored students with "Environmental Ambassador" awards on May 3.
Paul J. Restivo, director of the center and chairman of the Beautify Southern Illinois regional campaign, handed out plaques to each winner.
The 14 recipients volunteered 30 hours or more of community service in support of positive projects for the environment in Southern Illinois.
Serving others is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
Students honored, listed by hometown, were:
Barrington
- Tina E. Novak (1151 Donegal Lane), a sophomore working on a double major in economics and political science with a specialization in pre-law studies. She volunteered with the Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance.
Barry
- Theodore C. Sutton, a senior in electrical engineering technology. He led the designing of the Beautify Southern Illinois/ Keep Carbondale Beautiful Christmas Float this past winter. He also recently won a President's Volunteer Service Award from President Bush.
Carbondale
- Travis R. Davidson (5 Butternut Hill Drive), a senior in management information systems with a minor in accounting. He is the president of the Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance and recently won a President's Volunteer Service Award from President Bush.
Chicago
- Francis K. Chin (3916 W. 59th Place), a junior in electrical engineering technology.
East Peoria
- Jennae L. Dubois (213 E. N. Lakeview), a graduate student working on her master's in education with a concentration in recreation resource administration. She is the graduate assistant for the Beautify Southern Illinois regional campaign.
La Grange
- Benjamin F. Grant, a junior in plant and soil science. He was a landscaper for the Beautify Southern Illinois Service-Learning Youth Serve America Earth Day Project in April.
Metamora
- Kristen R. Kelch, a junior in plant and soil science. She was the head landscaper for the Beautify Southern Illinois Service-Learning Youth Serve America Earth Day Project in April.
Murphysboro
- Adebiyi Odunfa-Jones (80 Paper Lane), a senior in electrical engineering.
Peoria
- Chad L. Warner, a senior in electrical engineering. He has been a continuing volunteer for the Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance.
Springfield
- Karen A. Hine (3705 Tamarak Drive), a senior in marketing. She is the marketing/public relations staff member for the Beautify Southern Illinois regional campaign.
Stonefort
- Sarah E. Owen (505 Pit 12 Road), a senior in plant and soil science. She was a landscaper for the Beautify Southern Illinois Service-Learning Youth Serve America Earth Day Project in April.
Tinley Park
- Janine R. Gawel (16753 Hillside Place), a junior in political science. She is the newly elected president for the Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance.

Palmyra
- Sarah M. Sutton, a senior in university studies with a double minor in environmental studies and sociology. She is the service-learning coordinator for the Beautify Southern Illinois regional campaign. She also designed and built the Beautify Southern Illinois/ Keep Carbondale Beautiful Christmas Float this past winter.
Perryville
- Megan M. Kutz (2220 Old St. Marys Road), a junior in therapeutic recreation. She is on the board of the Student Recreation Society.
