Julie Boren to head editorial association
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Julie Boren, publisher of the Pike Press in Pittsfield, is the new president of the Southern Illinois Editorial Association (SIEA).
Boren began her one-year term today (April 21) at the SIEA's annual spring meeting at Giant City State Park Lodge. She succeeds Rich Bauer, managing editor of The Vandalia Leader-Union.
"I look forward to working with SIEA members this year to provide the programs and support they need to meet changing needs of newspapers, " Boren said.
Boren says she knew she wanted to work in the newspaper business early on. "I knew when I was 12 years old this was what I wanted, and I never changed my mind," she said.
Boren grew up on a farm near Milton in Pike County. She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Illinois and has spent her entire journalism career at the Pike Press in Pittsfield.
"I started as a reporter, then moved up to a news editor, editor and then publisher," she said. "I have been able to continue to learn new skills in different positions. Even though I've worked here my entire life, I have had the chance to advance."
Other officers moving up the organization's ladder are Mike Springston of Sparta to first vice president; Devin Miller of Carterville, second vice president; and Dan Brannon, Alton, secretary.
Jerry Reppert, publisher of the Anna Gazette-Democrat, will continue to serve as the organization's treasurer.
