SIUC to host House Republican leader
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross will share his insights on state government next week at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Cross' lecture, "How an Insider Copes on the Outside," is set for 4 p.m., Monday, April 24, in Student Center Ballroom D.
The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute is sponsoring the event. Admission is free.
"Tom is regarded as a key player in Republican efforts to reclaim power in Springfield," institute Director Mike Lawrence said. "I am confident this articulate leader's insights on the spring legislative session and upcoming election should be both enlightening and entertaining."
Cross is the House Republican leader in a state where Democrats control the General Assembly. He will discuss his political career and current events in Illinois government, institute assistant director Matt Baughman said.
Elected in 1992, Cross, R-Oswego, is serving his seventh term in the legislature. He is a former prosecutor with the Kendall County State's Attorney's Office.
Developing citizen-leaders with global perspectives, and pursuing leadership opportunities to address social, health and economic development issues of importance to our region are among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
