by Nicky Jacobs

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students who participated in an annual extern program during spring break will showcase their experiences during a ceremony set for Tuesday, March 28.

The SIU Alumni Association will host an extern recognition ceremony starting at 5 p.m. in the International Student Lounge in the Student Center. A program will follow in the Student Center Auditorium.

The extern program, sponsored by the Alumni Association and SIUC's colleges, assists students in gaining experience in their career field.

SIUC administrators and deans will honor this year's externs during Tuesday's event. Immediately following the program, students will pair off with their respective college dean and share their week's experience.

"The Extern Program is a fine example of alumni and friends demonstrating their support of this institution. Their willingness to mentor our students in their chosen fields is invaluable," said Tuesday Ashner, director of campus alumni programs for the SIU Alumni Association.

Each year, SIUC students complete externships throughout the United States. Students are matched with SIUC alumni and friends during spring break and apply skills learned in the classroom in a professional work environment. It enhances students' college education and helps them clarify their career objectives and goals.

Providing career-planning services to students is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint the University is following as it approaches its 150th anniversary in 2019.
