Media Advisory – Accounting Challenge
More than 200 students from at least 18 high schools and three community colleges will vie for $3,000 in scholarships and team trophies during the eighth annual Accounting Challenge, set for 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Student Recreation Center. The School of Accountancy sponsors the event, which includes individual and team competitions.
Chancellor Walter V. Wendler will welcome the group to SIUC around 10:15 a.m., followed by the team competition. Each year, Larry Busch, emeritus professor in the School of Art and Design, presents participants with a challenging activity that requires the students to work together. Lunch follows the competition, and an awards ceremony concludes the day's events. Winners in the individual competition receive scholarships that are available if the student attends SIUC and majors in accounting. Winners of the team competition earn trophies for their schools.
Participating high schools include: Breese Central, Carmi-White County, Carterville, Christopher, Crab Orchard, Eldorado, Farina South Central, Flora, Marion, Massac County, Meridian, Odin, Pinckneyville, Red Bud, Salem Community, Steeleville, Vienna and West Richland. Students from John A. Logan College, Kaskaskia Community College and Shawnee College also will participate.
Reporters, photographers and camera crews are welcome to cover the event. The team competition may present the best opportunities for photos and video. For more information, contact Marcus Odom , director of the School of Accountancy, at 618/453-2289.
