Workshop offers tips on saving energy

by K.C. Jaehnig

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- With economists predicting high heating costs ahead, a free workshop on strategies for lowering utility bills should prove exceptionally helpful.

Set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Carbondale Civic Center, the workshop will feature tips from local experts on ways to cut household energy usage. Those who attend will receive free energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs, insulation materials for doors, windows, sockets and light switches, and a water-saving showerhead.

The workshop is one of several activities sponsored by Rebuild Carbondale, a program aimed at improving energy management in regional homes and businesses. Southern Illinois University Carbondale houses the program, supported by a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

For more information about the workshop or Rebuild Carbondale, call James A. Mathias, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and energy processes, at 618/453-7016 or e-mail him at mathias@engr.siu.edu.
