Morning concert series tailored to youngsters

by Paula Davenport

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- They may not be old enough to attend school, but little children will appreciate a free morning concert series offered at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Now in its second season, "Klassics for Kids" is a unique classical music series geared to babies, toddlers and children up through the age of five — as well as parents and babysitters. The School of Music sponsors the program.

Fall concerts are at 10 a.m. the first Tuesday of the month in SIUC's Altgeld Hall, room 112.

Mark your calendars for:

  • Oct. 4: Opera; bring a sack lunch for a picnic after the concert.
  • Nov. 1: Halloween concert with orchestra.
  • Dec. 6: Madrigal singers.

Providing cultural outreach is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the long-range plan the University is following as it nears its 150th anniversary in 2019.
