Association hosting Homecoming Celebration

by Greg Scott

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Alumni, students and friends of Southern Illinois University Carbondale are invited to enjoy the 21st annual pre-game Homecoming Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Alumni “ Big Tent” east of McAndrew Stadium on the SIUC campus. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The SIU Alumni Association and SIUC’s colleges are hosting the event, sponsored by Egyptian Electric Cooperative. The tent opens at 11 a.m., following the annual Homecoming parade in downtown Carbondale and prior to SIUC’s football game against Missouri State University at 1:30 p.m.

This year’s Homecoming theme is “Southern Goes Hollywood”. Activities under the Alumni “ Big Tent” will include music, complimentary lunch and beverages and college displays. Several University dignitaries and guests will also be in attendance.

“ Our Homecoming Celebration unites various constituencies of the University in addition to the Southern Illinois region on one day. It is truly special for that reason,” said Tuesday Ashner, director of SIU alumni campus programs. “This is an event that our alumni, students and community friends look forward to. In addition, our football team continues to prosper, which enhances the enthusiasm and atmosphere even more.”

Ashner said 4,000 guests gathered under the “Big Tent" a year ago. She expects a similar turnout this year. The event is made possible by SIU Alumni Association membership dues. Membership information will be available at the celebration. Annual membership is $40 and life membership is $500, with installment plans available. Students may join the organization for a $15 annual fee. Alumni, students and friends of the University are eligible to join the SIU Alumni Association.
