Media Advisory: Youth Sports Program Awards
Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend ceremonies set for Thursday, July 28, recognizing the achievements of participants in Southern Illinois University Carbondale's inaugural National Youth Sports Program. The five-week day camp started June 27 for economically disadvantaged youths, ages 10 to 16. The camp attracted a total of 260 kids from Cairo, Carbondale, Marion, Murphysboro and Sparta – with an average of 164 youths participating daily.
The ceremonies are set from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Furr Auditorium in Pulliam Hall. The ceremonies include a slide show of children participating in a wide range of activities during the camp. At 10:15 a.m., campers who participated in dance classes during the camp will perform their routines.
At 12:15 p.m., six camp participants are being honored as National Youth Sports Program All-Stars; the kids were selected for exemplifying good behavior, sportsmanship and excellent attendance. Campers will also receive individual participation awards.
This is the first year SIUC participated in the federally funded program, which is also supported by the NCAA. More than 200 universities and colleges participated this summer.
The ceremonies provide a chance for interviews with instructors and participating campers. For more information, contact sports program Director Josh Cross at 618/453-6321 or 618/237-1643.
