Students attend SIUC's architecture camp
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Middle school students interested in architecture and possible careers in the field attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale's annual summer architecture camp.
Each student learned about architecture and design; participated in walking field trips on campus; worked in computer graphics on design projects, structural projects and spatial projects; cast concrete and toured various historically significant buildings in St. Louis. School of Architecture Professor Jon Davey has conducted the camp for elementary through high school students for 17 years.
The annual event drew 30 students from around the country. The concrete casts, where students placed decorated tile designs in concrete, harkens back to the style of 19th Century Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi and gives students a better understanding of construction, history and design.
Offering education-related camps is among the goals of Southern at 150: Building Excellence Through Commitment, the blueprint for the development of the University by the time it celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019.
