Randolph County cleanup set for Saturday

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Volunteers will fan out across Randolph County on Saturday, June 18, as part of the regional Beautify Southern Illinois campaign.

Glenn Poshard, former congressman and former chair of the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees, initiated the regional campaign. SIU Carbondale's Center for Environmental Health and Safety is assisting in the effort to make the region more attractive to potential employers and residents.

Teams of volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. to receive safety instructions, trash bags and safety vests before heading out to clean up Randolph County communities. In particular, the effort will target state highways. The cleanup will run until 10:30 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the following locations:

Baldwin – community center.

Chester – community center.

Coulterville – city hall.

Ellis Grove – Pop-A-Top parking lot.

Prairie du Rocher – village hall.

Red Bud – Ratz Memorial Park

Ruma – village hall.

Sparta – Kroger parking lot.

Steeleville – city hall.

Tilden – city hall.

The cleanup is in conjunction with a countywide used/waste tire collection set for 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday at the Sparta city garage. For more information on the tire collection, call Alan Dyke at 618/443-2917.
