June 16-July 4 Southern Illinois Music Festival planned

by Paula Davenport

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The sounds of classical music — performed live by visiting and resident world-class musicians — will fill dozens of venues from Mount Vernon to Cairo during this summer's Southern Illinois Music Festival.

Events for listeners of all ages, including children and teen-agers, will take place from June 16 through July 4. Southern Illinois University Carbondale's School of Music is sponsoring the festival, the first of its kind in our area.

Audiences may choose from 36 performances of orchestra and chamber music, opera, musical theater, ballet, jazz and special performances for children spread among eight communities.

Musicians with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra will serve as the festival's resident ensemble. And numerous internationally known soloists will also grace the stages.

As an added benefit, students enrolled in SIUC music camps may take in the performances and study with festival artists.

A complete list of events, arranged alphabetically by venue and dates, follows, along with admission information. Tickets to performances, for which there are fees, are available through Ticketmaster at 866/646-8849, at ticketmaster.com or at Ticketmaster outlets.

To purchase tickets in person, visit the SIUC Ticket Office in the SIU Arena, the Student Center Ticket Office or concert venues an hour before events. More ticket information is available at 618/453-2000.
