Two win Super Student scholarships

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Alexis Marie Allen of Sullivan and Tiffany Heil of Mundelein are winners of the 2005 Super Student Junior Scholarships, sponsored by the Student Alumni Council at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Both students received the honors at the Super Student Honors Dinner on Saturday, April 9, at SIUC. Chancellor and Mrs. Walter V. Wendler join the SIU Alumni Association and Student Alumni Council in hosting the event.

Super Student Junior Scholarships, awarded annually to outstanding juniors at SIUC, are worth $500 each. Eligibility requirements for the Super Student Scholarship include being currently employed, belonging to at least two Registered Student Organizations, and maintaining a minimum grade-point average of 3.5.

Here is a closer look at this year's recipients:

  • Alexis Allen, a management major, is the daughter of Michael and Donna Allen of Sullivan. Allen is an active member of the Student Programming Council, serving as executive director and representative to the vice chancellor's advisory committee. She has also been a senator and finance committee chairperson for the Undergraduate Student Government at SIUC. Allen is a member of the Recreational Sports and Services committee, core curriculum committee, and residence hall advisory board.

She is a Dean's List student, University Honor's Program honoree, and Chancellor's scholar. Allen works in the SIU Athletic Ticket Office. She has also worked in the University's Financial Aid Office and Shryock Auditorium, and served the University as a student life advisor captain.

  • Tiffany Heil, a recreation major, is the daughter of Annette Heil of Mundelein and Tom Heil of Lake Zurich. Heil is the founding president of the Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance and publicity chair for the Student Recreation Society. She has served Delta Zeta Sorority in various capacities, chairing its alumnae relations, community service, and philanthropy.

She is a University Honor's Program recipient, received the President's Award for Service and Civic participation and Pan-Hellenic Service Woman of the Year honor last year. Heil's service and employment in the community includes: Keep Carbondale Beautiful, Center for Environmental Health and Safety, John Powers Center, Carbondale Women's Center, Big Brother/Big Sister; and Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
