SIUC offers a variety of summer camps this year

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- If you are looking for productive and fun activities for your child this summer, sign them up now for a summer camp experience.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers a wide variety of camps — geared to everyone from budding architects, hoops freaks, aspiring engineers, ballet dancers, future tennis pros, cheerleaders and others.

There are camps for kids of all ages and interests. As well as programs welcoming parents and other adults to participate.

Registration is open now.

Unless listed otherwise, registration is through the SIUC Office of Continuing Education at 618/536-7751. Call between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Or check out listings online at www.dce.siu.edu and click on the "youth" link on the top left side of the page.

Among this year's camp offerings:

SPORTS CAMPS

  • Saluki Baseball Camp, June 13-16. Commuter. Ages 7-13. $170/$150 (team).
  • Boys Basketball Camp I: Offensive Development, June 14-16. Resident or commuter. Grades 6-12. $165/135, respectively.
  • Boys Basketball Camp II: Father-Child Camp, June 11. Commuter. Grades 1-7. $75.
  • Boys Basketball Camp III: Jr. High Team Camp, June 15-17. Resident or commuter. Any junior high team is eligible to participate. $230/$200.
  • Boys Basketball Camp IV: Day Camp I, June 20-23. Grades 3-8. $130/$180 (for both day camps).
  • Boys Basketball Camp V: High School Tournament, June 20-23. Commuter. This tournament is for high school junior varsity and Varsity teams. Contact SIUC Basketball coaching staff at 618/453-6667 for more information. $290/team; $525/two teams.

MUSIC CAMPS

  • Guitar Seminar, June 6-10: Beginning and advanced levels of study available. Technique and musicianship study through individual and class participation. Performer I: Advanced, $185; Performer II: Beginners, $135.
  • Sr. Jazz Improvisation Camp, June 19-25: Open to all high school instrumentalists (rhythm section players and wind players) who wish to improve their jazz improvisation skills. Emphasis of the camp will be on improvisation and small group playing, with one hour of the day devoted to big band performances and demonstrations. Commuters $175; Dorm residents (high school students only) $350.
  • Music Theatre Camp, June 19-25: A program for 13-18 year olds. Campers are given individual and group attention for improvement in singing, acting and dancing skills. Daily rehearsals with the experienced camp leaders include creative exercises concentrating on each student's performance strengths and working to better their shortcomings. They are encouraged to grow as a team while allowing each other their own time in the spotlight! The final performance includes a presentation of scenes and musical numbers learned. Commuters $175; Dorm Residents $350.
  • Sr. High Band Camp (2 week), June 19-July 2: Concert band, jazz band, theory, technique classes. Commuters $300; Dorm residents $600.
  • Sr. High Band Camp (1 week), June 26-July 2. Concert band, jazz band, theory, technique classes. Commuters $175, Dorm residents $350.
  • Jr. High Band Camp, July 10-15: Band, master classes, theory, technique classes. Commuter $150; Dorm resident (must be at least going into seventh grade) $295.
  • Youth Band Camp, July 18-23 and 25-30: Two exciting weeks of music instruction for students who have been playing for 1/2 to 2 years (grades 4-6) – band, technique classes, sectionals, listening experiences. (Day camp only, no housing.) One week-$40; Two weeks- $70.
  • Children's Choir Camp, August 1-5. Grades 4-8. $55. (Tentative).
