by Katharine Quaranta

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host the 19th Annual Arts in Education Festival Tuesday and Wednesday, April 19 and 20. Organizers expect nearly 4,000 grade school children to attend.

The children will participate in craft and mask-making sessions at the Student Center, dance classes at Shryock Auditorium and will take the stage during acting workshops in the University Museum Auditorium, in Faner Hall. They will also view dance, music and theatre performances by area artists.

Sessions begin at 9:45 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Each session is 45 minutes long and there is a fifteen-minute break to allow classes to move to the next activity.

Many volunteers, including artists, community members, chaperones, and SIUC staff and students, donate their time and talent to ensure that the festival runs smoothly.

Sponsors include Southern Illinois University Carbondale —The College of Liberal Arts, The College of Education, Shryock Auditorium, the Office of the Chancellor—and Carbondale Community Arts
