Marshall named Accounting Services director

by Tom Woolf

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Veteran Southern Illinois University Carbondale employee Judith N. Marshall is the new permanent director of Accounting Services.

Marshall, an Effingham native, had been acting director since last September. She replaced Kevin D. Bame, who became the University's executive director of finance last August.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in accounting from SIUC in 1983, Marshall joined the Accounting Services office in 1984 as an accountant I, moving up to accountant II in 1986, accountant III in 1989 and accountant IV in 2001.

"Judy is an excellent choice for the director of Accounting Services," Bame said. "She has more than 20 years of experience with the University's financial operations. She is a problem-solver and is committed to streamlining procedures to reduce bureaucracy. Judy has the respect of her co-workers and the University community."

Noting her office has a tradition of service to the University, Marshall said she is trying to expand on that tradition both in the University community and beyond.

"In December, we participated in a job shadowing program with Carbondale Community High School, where we had a couple of their students who are interested in accounting spend a day with us," she said. "Next week, we will participate in the Alumni Association's spring break extern program for the first time. We will have an accounting major from the Nakajo, Japan campus with us. We're trying to do some things we traditionally have not done."

In addition, a "modest" remodeling of part of the Accounting Services area allowed Marshall and her staff to create a training facility.

"We're going to establish an ongoing program of training for users of our services," she said. "I'm excited about our efforts to be more user-friendly and accessible to the campus."

The SIU Board of Trustees ratified Marshall's appointment last month.
