Women's History Month activities set
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Women's History Month 2005 kicks off March 1 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale with the theme "Celebrating Women Changing History."
The theme honors and recognizes the role of American women in transforming culture, history and politics as leaders, writers, scientists, educators, politicians, artists, historians and informed citizens.
Events scheduled for Women's History Month are:
Tuesday, March 1
• Brown Bag Series: "Convent Chronicles: Women Writing about Women in the Late Middle Ages," by Anne Winston-Allen, SIUC associate professor of foreign languages and literature, noon, Student Center Kaskaskia Room.
• Speaker Panel: "Shattering the Glass Ceiling," 7 p.m., Student Center Video Lounge (fourth floor).
Wednesday, March 2
• Women's reception: Open to all, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Student Center Old Main Lounge.
Monday, March 7
• Campus Walk for Wellness and Woman's Scholarships: 3:45-5:30 p.m., check-in at Wheeler Hall. Participants receive a complimentary ticket to the Celebrate Women reception.
• Lecture and discussion: "Women of the West Wing: Politics, Popular Culture, and Women at the Edge of the 21st Century," presented by Heather Hurlburt, a writer, consultant and former presidential speechwriter. 4 p.m., Student Center Missouri Room.
• Visiting artist lecture: Sana Musasama, a ceramic artist from New York, will speak at 7 p.m. in the University Museum Auditorium at Faner Hall.
Tuesday, March 8
• Lecture and discussion: "A Day in the Life of Women's History," by Holly S. Hurlburt, SIUC assistant professor of history, 2-3 p.m., Student Center Video Lounge (fourth floor).
• Lecture and discussion: "Women in Art History," by Angela Reinoehl, SIUC lecturer in art and design, 4-5:50 p.m., Student Center Ohio Room.
• Campus Walk for Wellness and Women's Scholarships: 3:45-5:30 p.m. Check in at Wheeler Hall. Participants receive a complimentary ticket to the Celebrate Women reception.
• Reception and program: The reading of winning essays from the 10th annual writing contest of the Carbondale branch of the American Association of University Women; 7 p.m. reception, 7:30 p.m. program, Faculty Club, 1000 S. Elizabeth St.
• Discussion: I.M.A.G.E. part 2, 7-9 p.m., Student Center Ohio Room.
Wednesday, March 9
• Silent auction and program: Ninth annual Celebrate Women Benefit for Women's Scholarships. Noon-5: 30 p.m. silent auction, 2-6 p.m. program, University Museum at Faner Hall. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for others.
• Play: "The Vagina Monologues," presented by the Student Theater Guild, 7:30 p.m., McLeod Theater.
Thursday, March 10

Monday, March 21
• Discussion: Women in Music, 7 p.m., Student Center Ohio Room.
Wednesday, March 23
• Award ceremony, reception and reading: Featuring the six winners of the Roxana Rivera Memorial Poetry Contest and the contest's judge, Honorée F. Jeffers, a professor at the University of Oklahoma and the author of two prize-winning collections of poetry, 4-5 p.m., Student Center Illinois Room.
Thursday, March 24
• Speaker panel and discussion: Graduate Student Women of Color Panel, moderated by Pamela A. Smoot, SIUC assistant professor of black American studies, 3:30 p.m., Student Center Missouri Room.
• Discussion: "Student, Mother, Lover, Other Part 2," 7 p.m., Student Center Illinois Room.
Saturday, March 26
• Crafts: Celebrate Your Personal History: Scrapbooking, 1-3 p.m., Village Crafts Classroom at Michael's Arts & Crafts, 1261 E. Main, Carbondale, 457-6694.
Tuesday, March 29
• Lecture: "Women and the law: My view from the bench," by Marilyn S. Skoglund, associate justice on the Vermont Supreme Court. 7 p.m., Law School Auditorium.
Wednesday, March 30
• Live performance: Soul Jazz Café, 7 p.m., Student Center Big Muddy Room.
Thursday, March 31
• Demonstration and discussion: "Extreme Makeover – the SIUC edition," 5:30-8:30 p.m., Student Center Mississippi Room.
Through May 14
"Modern Women Artists," from the University Museum's permanent collection, University Museum. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday through Monday. It will be closed during spring break, March 12-20.
Women's History Month sponsors are the Black Women's Task Force, the Carbondale branch of American Association of University Women, the creative writing program and the English department, Crimson Theory Enterprise, Delta Phi Mu, the departments of history, sociology and theater, the fine arts activity fee, School of Art and Design and Southern Clay Works, School of Law, Student Development – Multicultural Programs and Services, University Museum, University Women's Professional Advancement, Women's Caucus, Women's Services and Women's Studies.
