Saluki Family Weekend set for Oct. 29-31

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale students and their families will have an abundance of activities and entertainment to choose from during Saluki Family Weekend, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 29-31.

Families may use the facilities at the Student Recreation Center free, browse the annual craft sale, enjoy a hypnotist and a Harry Potter film, tailgate, cheer on the Saluki football team and much more.

Here's the schedule: 
Friday, Oct. 29

  • Family members can use the Student Recreation Center facilities for free, 5:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Visit the information desk on the upper level for details.
  • Bowling and billiards in the Student Center, half-price for families of SIUC students with SIUC ID, 9 a.m. Friday-12:30 a.m. Saturday.
  • Family Weekend Craft Sale featuring regional vendors in the Student Center Hall of Fame, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Free boat rental (weather permitting) at Campus Lake, noon-6 p.m.
  • Undergraduate art show awards reception, 7 p.m., Student Center Art Alley. This annual competition features the best works submitted by current SIUC undergraduates. Award winners will be announced during the reception, and the exhibit will be on display in Art Alley until Nov. 19.
  • Student Programming Council film, "Harry Potter, Prisoner of Azbakan," Student Center Auditorium, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 for SIUC students, $4 for general public at the door.
  • Hypnotist Rich Aimes, 8 p.m., Student Center Ballroom D. Tickets are $3 for students, $4 general admission.

Saturday, Oct. 30

  • Family members can use the Student Recreation Center facilities for free, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Visit the information desk on the upper level for details.
  • Registration tent and welcome activities, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., east of the Student Center. Registration, entertainment, free food and prizes.
  • Undergraduate Art Show, 8 a.m.-11 p.m., Student Center Art Alley.
  • Saluki Family Association breakfast, 9 a.m., Student Center Old Main Room. Advance tickets are $8.50 for adults, $6.50 for children 10 and under, children 5 and under free. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $9.50/$7.50 children.
  • Bowling and billiards in the Student Center, half-price for families of SIUC students with SIUC ID, 10 a.m. Saturday-12:30 a.m. Sunday.
  • Family Weekend Craft Sale featuring regional vendors in the Student Center Hall of Fame, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Campus tours, 10 and 11 a.m., noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m., registration tent. Ride the tour train and listen to a guided tour narrated by a student life adviser.
  • Free boat rental (weather permitting) at Campus Lake, noon-6 p.m.
  • Raku pottery firing, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Student Center south patio. Glaze a ceramic vessel and watch it get fired Raku-style. Cost is $3 each.
  • Annual Greek Sing, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., steps of Shryock Auditorium. Members of SIUC's Greek fraternities and sororities perform favorites.
  • Residence Hall dining, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4-7 p.m., Lentz and Trueblood halls. Tickets are $6 per person, available at the door.
  • Family Fun Festival, 2-4 p.m., Student Center John W. Corker Lounge. Free food, giveaways. Parents can send their student a "good luck on finals" note, order Parents Association birthday kits, receive Carbondale and business information and meet the winners of the "Family of the Weekend" contest.
  • Student Programming Council film, "Harry Potter, Prisoner of Azbakan," Student Center Auditorium, 3:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 for SIUC students, $4 for general public at the door.
  • Pre-game tailgate activities, 3-6 p.m., Arena parking lots.
  • Saluki Dinner Buffet, 4-6 p.m., Student Center Ballroom D. Advance tickets are $10 for adults, $8 children 10 and under, children 5 and under free. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $11/$9.
  • Saluki football vs. Western Illinois University, 6 p.m., McAndrew Stadium. Reserved and general admission tickets are free for SIUC students, $15 for adults, $6 for high school and under. 

Sunday, Oct. 31

  • Family members can use the Student Recreation Center facilities for free, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Visit the information desk on the upper level for details.
  • Autumn Harvest Brunch, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Student Center Ballroom D. Advance tickets are $10.50 for adults, $6 for children 10 and under, children 5 and under free. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $11.50/ $7.
